Short answer: in 2026, a KL electrician typically charges RM80–RM250 to come out (from RM200 after hours), RM150–RM450 to find and fix a tripping problem, and RM60–RM500 to add a power point depending on how the cable is run. Older homes in established KL neighbourhoods often still have original wiring. Signs it's time: frequent tripping, warm or discoloured sockets, flickering lights, or a DB box with old-style fuses.

Who is allowed to do electrical work?

Under Malaysia's Electricity Regulations 1994, wiring work must be carried out by a registered electrical contractor and supervised by a wireman holding a Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission) certificate of competency. The installation should be tested before it's switched on. Ask to see the wireman's certificate — a proper electrician won't mind.

Why does my house keep tripping?

  • A faulty appliance — water heaters, kettles and older fridges are common culprits.
  • Moisture in outdoor sockets, porch lights or bathroom points after heavy rain.
  • Damaged or worn wiring, sometimes from renovation drilling or pests.
  • Too many high-power appliances on one circuit.

Quick check: switch everything off at the DB, unplug all appliances, then reset. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring — call an electrician.

Red flags

  • Bypassing or removing the ELCB/RCCB to "stop the tripping". This removes your protection against electric shock.
  • A quote to rewire the whole house for one dead socket.
  • The cheapest RCCB replacement quote with no mention of testing.
  • No certified wireman involved in new wiring work.

Electrician FAQ

Is it safe to keep resetting the RCCB?

Once or twice to test, yes. If it keeps tripping, stop — it's warning you about a fault. Leave it off for the affected circuit and get it checked.

How long does rewiring a condo take?

Usually several days to a couple of weeks, depending on how much wiring is concealed and whether walls need patching and painting afterwards.
