·6 min read

Short answer: in Kuala Lumpur, a locksmith typically charges RM80–RM250 to open a locked door during the day and RM150–RM350 at night, with midnight jobs often above RM300. Changing a basic lock costs RM80–RM350 including the new lock, a main-door mortise lock RM150–RM300, and installing a digital lock RM200–RM600 in labour. The same rates apply across Kepong, Batu Caves, Setapak, Damansara and the rest of the Klang Valley.

Watch out for the RM20 call-out trap

Some listings advertise a RM20 call-out. When the locksmith arrives, the lock "has to be replaced" and the bill comes to 5–10 times the advertised price. Locksmiths aren't licensed in Malaysia, so protect yourself:

  • Ask for the total price — opening plus any parts — before they start.
  • Ask whether the door can be opened without drilling. Many basic locks can.
  • Expect to show proof that you live there (IC address, tenancy agreement or management confirmation). A locksmith who doesn't ask is a warning sign.
  • Get a receipt that lists what was done.

Locksmith FAQ

Can a locksmith open my door without damaging it?

Often, yes — especially basic cylinder and knob locks. High-security deadbolts and some mortise locks may need drilling, which means replacing the lock. Ask before work starts.

Should I change the locks when I move into a new home?

Yes. You don't know who has copies of the old keys. A basic lock change costs RM80–RM350, which is cheap insurance.

Prices in this guide are typical Klang Valley market ranges compiled from published Malaysian locksmith price guides and retailer listings in 2025–2026. Your final price depends on the lock, the door and the time of day.
