Water Heater Installation Cost in Malaysia (2026): Instant vs Storage
What a new water heater really costs in KL in 2026 — unit prices for instant and storage heaters, installation labour, and the wiring extras that catch people out.
Short answer: in 2026, an instant water heater in Malaysia costs about RM230–RM400 without a pump and RM480–RM780 with a DC pump. Installing it on an existing point costs RM80–RM180. A 30–50L storage heater costs RM820–RM1,000 (premium models up to about RM2,000), and installation runs RM150–RM450. If you need a new power point, add RM130–RM560.

- Removing the old heater: RM50–RM120.
- New heater power point (instant heater): RM130–RM560. The higher end includes a new ELCB/RCCB.

- Extra hot-water piping for a storage heater: from about RM300, depending on the run.
- Repair visit: diagnosis RM50–RM120 (often waived if you go ahead); heating element or thermostat replacement RM100–RM350.

| Job | Typical total (RM) |
|---|---|
| Replace an instant heater like-for-like (existing point) | 310–580 |

Instant or storage: which suits a KL home?
Instant heaters suit most condo and terrace bathrooms with one shower point. They heat water as it flows, take little space, and cost less. If your shower pressure is weak — common on upper floors of older condos and in homes fed from a roof tank — choose a model with a built-in DC pump. Pump models are now standard and add RM150–RM250.
Storage heaters make sense when you want hot water at several taps at once, fill a bathtub, or need hot water in the kitchen. They need wall space, a dedicated circuit, and proper piping, so installation costs more.
What a proper installation includes
- A dedicated heater point with the right cable size and a working earth. Never a plug-in extension.
- ELCB/RCCB protection on the circuit, and a test that it trips.
- For storage heaters: a safety (pressure relief) valve fitted and piped to drain.
- No leaks at the inlet and outlet joints after the water is turned back on.
- Electrical work done under a wireman certified by Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Energy Commission), as required under the Electricity Regulations 1994.
Red flags in a water heater quote
- Unit and labour lumped together, so you can't compare against retail prices.
- A new power point quoted with no mention of earthing or ELCB protection.
- Being told a heater "doesn't need an earth" or having the ELCB bypassed because it keeps tripping.
- Paying separately for installation the retailer would have done for free.
Water heater FAQ
Why does my water heater keep tripping the power?
Usually a failing heating element, water getting into the unit, or a wiring fault at the point. Switch it off and don't keep resetting the RCCB — have it checked. A diagnosis visit is typically RM50–RM120.
How long does installation take?
An instant heater on an existing point is usually done within one to two hours. A storage heater with new piping and a new circuit can take most of a day.
Is a pump model worth the extra cost?
Only if your water pressure is low. If your current shower is already strong, a non-pump heater is enough and saves RM150–RM250.
